The Pennsylvania Wilds Astronomy Club was given a grant by the Tabor Foundation to pay for the hardware to construct a Sunscan Spectroheliograph. This device allows high resolution images of the sun to be collected and shared with students and the public at our various outreach events. As the club’s contribution, members made many 3D printed parts, hardware was assembled, software was loaded to the device’s Raspberry Pi, and optics aligned. A big thanks to the Tabor Foundation and our assembly team for bringing it all together quickly.
In late April 2026, we collected our first images, and our skill level rapidly improved. Examples of our recent images are shown below. Now that it is operational, the club is offering to bring it to schools and other STEM events in our region. If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Steve Conard at astro@ptd.net
